Hello all,

Regarding my "inprocessing" post I am taking the advice of some folks there and looking hard at the ANG/ARNG as a way to join. At least initially. I want airborne (of course) and the Airborne ARNG/ANG units in my area seem to be SF and STS. Great by me as it is a definate goal.

Question is do you folks advise contacting a recruiter for positions available first or is it a good idea to speak directly to the unit(s) as well so they can get a better idea of what I'm all about?

Any help would be great.
Thanks!

i'm sure if you are considering a certain unit then it would be advisable to contact them first and send what MOS they need and when. the recruiter may or may not have the most up to date info i these types of cases. specifically when dealing with a ARNG SOF unit.

i'm at work so i called the NG recruiter for that answer for you.

Thank you very much for the reply! Straight from the source. There is so much info to take in I don't want to end up forgetting half of it while I begin this process. I want to make sure I don't waste anyones time on trivial questions the first visit this time around.

Thanks again.

It really depends...

In most of these special units, the operators will respect your motivation in contacting them first and will be happy to talk to you.

When it comes to vacancies (for support positions, mostly), unless they require interviews - they may not know if the recruiters have personnel projected to fill positions.

At some locations, you may encounter personnel who don't want to talk to you until you talk to the recruiter. That way the recruiter does the screening and you're not wasting what they consider valuable time.

Neither response is wrong.

I think you're doing the right thing. Get on here, ask questions, gather information, prepare yourself and maybe even talk to someone in the units you're interested in before you engage in an initial conversation with the recruiter.

Good luck!

One additional thought:

Having one of us set you up with an interview with the operators at those units is the middle ground to your two options.
