Thank you very much for that info.

I spoke with he and his dad yesterday AM and gave him this thread. I suggested he should do more pullups, do some rucking to toughen up his feet, and do some more swimming.

He's very concerned about RIP, since he'll have had only a minimal amount of prep in terms of basic infantry skills - only what he'll get in 54B OSUT.
Will this be a problem for him, and what can he do to prepare himself now, or during OSUT?

He's spending three hours a day walking through the woods with a ruck, lifting weights, running, and doing pushups and situps - he's highly motivated.

He won't need a lot of infantry knowledge to make it through RIP. RIP is mainly a gut check. A lot of what he needs to know to pass RIP he will learn there. I would tell him to memorize the Ranger Creed before he arrives at RIP.

Once he gets to his Ranger Batt he needs to study on his own the FM 7-8 [The Infantry Platoon and Squad] and the SH 21-76 [Ranger Handbook]. Once in the Ranger Batt the Ranger qualed 11Bs will help him get ready for Ranger school. He will also need to use some of his own initiative to learn all he can in preparation for the RTB challenges.

Remember that the Ranger Batts have been getting non-infantry MOS soldiers ready for the RTB since 1974. If I was him I would worry more about the mental and physical thoughness he will need to make it through RIP and serve for some months in his Ranger Batt before he is sent by his unit to Ranger school.

I second everything that RangerRios has said here. MOS will not be that important in RIP. It will be a gut check and it really just tests how bad you want to be a Ranger. Then the fun begins.

current in and out calls state that a soldier that possesses the SQI of V or G may reenlist into the MOS of 11B at any time witout regard to current MOS strengths.

basicly, if he gets tabbed he can become infantry anytime he wants.
