i used to love it when we would get spec.4's out of college.the first time you went to the field some private would have square to him away.
i think its a good idea to train these guys up,but to give them anything more than e-2 is a slap in the face to guys who had to earn there rank.

Our DEP Functions are our own station but every 2 weeks we have company ones.
Shitty thing is I have not once had work outs, they said when it gets warmer outside but its been 40 degrees for the last few weeks, and in my book that’s warm enough.
How exactly do you earn promotions in BCT?
About College - I honestly don’t know if I will go, soo I could careless about college money all I want is to get paid so I don’t have to be a burden on my family. All I need is money to keep me alive everything else will go to my family.
If I survive long enough in the army I will go to college and try to become an officer that is the only purpose I see for college.
I love chess, I love thinking and planning all the time (one of the things I naturally do and can’t stop). There are like soo many scenarios I play through in my head for my future. So no matter what happens to me in the future I know I will be fine.

hey bnz, get the damn money! no wait, lemme make that a little more clear:
GET THE "F"ING MONEY, DUMBASS!!!
gonne be a time you'll regeret not doin' it, I guarantee you. And, so you ain't joinin' up for it, big "F"ion deal! You still earned it, right? So get it. Better to have it and not use it, than want it and not be able to get it, right? Of course I'm right. I'm always right. Get the money. All the money and extras you can get. It's not like you're not gonna earn 'em. You certainly deserve it more than so9me dope-smokin', granola-munchin', sandal-wearin', pinko, ass-bandit! So get it!

well...i have a DEP/DTP meeting for the first time this saturday...the way i see it here is that it is being used as a recruiting tool...we are suppose to bring a couple of friends...we are also suppose to do some marching etc...pre basic task list stuff and then eat some pizza...yep...its crap to me because we are learning a little but the "classes" are only suppose to be like 5 minutes...its a waste of time and money if you ask me...i havent spoke to a recruiter since november!!!!...i leave June 11 and havent spoken to one since then...thats crazy but ima trying to prepare the best i can on my own...

A college degree in no way makes you a better soldier than someone who has only graduated high school. Anyone enlisting for the first time should go in no higher than PFC and earn the rank above that.
Whether specialist or corporal a soldier is going to be given leadership responsibilities if it's only being put in charge of police call around the barracks initially.
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American GI. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Drill is very important and must be done with precision...you DON'T want your platoon looking like shmucks on the parade deck come graduation..
I remember my DEP in the 80's did very little to no drill..but when I went to Parris Island..they drilled us into the ground non-stop...My memories are still clear 14 years later of drilling on the parade deck with DI in my face screaming like a lunatic..
As for the college thing..well thats a tough call..since I am biased...If you worked/payed/student-loan your own way through college, a real 4-year college, and got a real degree with a great GPA..not some Liberal Art degree ...then it shows that your squared away and possibly a rank up would be in order...
But if mommy and daddy paid your way in some county college were you got to stay home and not face bills...and you slacked your way through with min GPA...then by no means you deserve squat..
Regards
Chris

In my experience working with Navy recruits, it's not at all unusual to see people getting bumped up to E-2 because they participated in a pre-boot camp Indoctrination program with the recruiters. The Navy calls their program DEP advancements and I would imagine it's pretty much the same thing that you young 'uns describe goes on in the Army. How effective it is I could not say, but to me an E-2 is still nuthin'. You guys have a long road ahead of you so watch and learn. I came in the Army as a slick sleeve Private E-1 and I didn't get my skeeter wing (E-2) until after I had endured a 6 months slog through BCT & AIT first. By that time, of course, my CO and my Plt Sgt was begining to think they might be able to beat me into a real soldier (someday) and I was beginning to understand my job.
I have no heartburn with DEP promotions so long as the recruiters are able to teach you guys some really useful things that'll help you when you get to boot. I think the upper limit should be E-2 though.
