Reckless endangerment? At a minimum, those involved need to be AT LEAST charged with attempted murder.

Here is the article I saw this morning on it.

Marine Gets 20 Years for Parachute Tampering

Aug. 7
— MIAMI (Reuters) - A U.S. Marine was sentenced to 20 years in military prison on Thursday for cutting the lines of 13 parachutes he packed for a training jump at a North Carolina base, a spokeswoman at the Camp Lejeune base said.

Three Marines were slightly injured when they jumped from a C-17 aircraft at 1,250 feet with the sabotaged chutes last September. They were forced to deploy reserve parachutes when their main parachutes failed to open, and hit the ground hard.

Lance Cpl. Antoine Boykins admitted on Wednesday that he had cut the lines when packing them for the jump but did not offer a reason. Prosecutors said he was angry about a disciplinary action.

Boykins, 21, of Baltimore, Maryland, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of reckless endangerment, aggravated assault and destruction of government property. In doing so, he avoided court martial on more serious charges of attempted premeditated murder, which carried a penalty of life in prison.

Boykins was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in the military prison at Camp Lejeune, where he is stationed. He also was reduced in rank by two grades, dishonorably discharged from the military and forced to forfeit pay and allowances, the camp spokeswoman said.

The training exercise was halted after the first three parachutes failed and an investigation revealed the lines had been cut on 13 of the 25 parachutes that were to be used that day.

Investigators with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service linked Boykins to the sabotage after finding his fingerprints on a note with the serial numbers of the damaged chutes under a table in the room where the parachutes were stored.

Charges were dropped against a second Camp Lejeune Marine suspected in the incident, and a third remained under investigation.
