JR, I completely agree with you!
I'm one of those who bears the brunt of everyone's questions (and some criticism) for wearing my Ranger tab on my service dress jacket. I wore it at ALS (where surprisingly, none of the instructors said anything!), and I'll wear it throughout my career.
Last year I had to get a couple of photos done for NCO of the year. Someone told me to cut the tab off my jacket! I said "look, either they think I'm the winner because of who I am and what I've done, or they can nitpick me for wearing a tab that the AFI leaves pretty open for analysis."
As long as getting approval for tabs doesn't include the raven tab, I'm in.

if you have problems when you wear the tap on your coat, why not wear the metallic tab like some people do on their shirt (see army recruiter)???
it would be placed just like your airborne and freefall badges would. just a thought, i'm not a ranger but i figure that advice may help.

I knew a TACP Ranger (earned it while an SP) who always wore the metal tab. That was back in the early 1990s, when it was REALLY uncommon.
I think the metal tab is ok on the shirt, but the cloth tab should DEFINITELY be worn on the jacket.
Then again - They don't get my clearance on these issues... [ ]
