3 Air Academy Cadets Face Drug Charges

By ROBERT WELLER
Associated Press Writer
October 31, 2003, 11:01 PM EST
Denver, Colorado
quote:
Three Air Force Academy cadets were charged Friday with using Ecstasy and other drugs -- the latest blow for the troubled school and just three days before a visit from top Air Force brass.

The charges come in a year that began with a sexual assault scandal that prompted sweeping changes in leadership and policies at the academy. So far this year, six cadets have been charged with drug offenses; at least six more face punishment for violating alcohol rules.

Seniors John-Paul Doolin, James M. Long and Shane T. Thomas could face prison and dismissal from the Air Force if convicted. It was not immediately known whether the three had attorneys.

Doolin was charged with using Ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms and ketamine, an anesthetic that is a popular club drug. He also was charged with distributing pills containing an Ecstasy derivative.

Long was charged with lying about the illegal use of drugs, as well as using cocaine. Thomas was charged with using ketamine and Ecstasy and with threatening another cadet.

The charges demonstrate that the academy won't condone illegal drug use, said Col. Thomas Drohan, the school's vice commandant for operations.

Two years ago, the academy was hit by a drug scandal that implicated 38 cadets of the 4,300-member student body. Former commanders have said they were slow to react to the sexual assault scandal because they were focusing on curbing drug use.

Air Force Secretary James Roche and other top officials are expected to visit the academy Monday.

What the hell? Those that attend the Academy are supposed to be the best and the brightest. And then they go and throw it all away to get high. On second thought, I wonder if they planned it this way: Take a free ride on Uncle Sam for a top-notch education, and then get kicked out before having to serve. Doesn't work so well if they wind up in prison, though. I hope that they ALL wind up in jail! As for housecleaning? They need to FIRE all the people that they just brought in; they've obviously failed in cleaning up the Air Force Academy.
