As some may or may not knowm, by other posts I have made. I'm a huge avaition buff. Today I spotted four, two ship flights of Swiss AF F5E Tiger IIs flying by my house. May have been more but I had to split to go get some fireworks for the BBQ I had tonight.
I was soo excited I could barely contain myself. My buddies (dirty rotten civillians) just couldnt understand my I thought it was such a big deal.
Think the Tigers took off out of Mather field(Sacramento Ca.) after a refueling stop. Headed @ north west. Anybody ever heard of the Swiss AF training in the States? I was really amazed to see them so far from home.

You'd be surprised how many nations we play host to when it comes to training facilitys. Switzerland, like most western European countrys, hasn't the land to conduct an sort of realistic flight training, let alone bombing...

Even better than Swiss tigers...

ON my AF base there is currently two MiG-29 Fulcrum Fighters. They are German hold overs from the East/West days. These planes are very impressive and capable platforms...good thing that the pilots that usually use them have no real training.

Still, even though they are allies...it is "Red-Dawn"ish to be walking around a US military base and seeing MiG's overhead.

khyros, I wouldnt have been that surprised to see just about any other countries A/C flying over. I just had no idea that we ever did any training with neutral Switzerland.

warpusher, I have seen some shows and read a few articles concerning the Germans keeping some people and A/C here. For training in the states on a permanent basis. Do our guys get to fly much against the MIGSs?

Neutral? HAH! Their politics aside, the Swiss pay good money to keep their military in top notch condition and have a long history of "renting" trianing and facilitys from other countrys.

rakk,

I would think that they do get to fly against them. Most of the missions are out over the gulf of mexico. The 33rd FW is based at Eglin, and their job is air-to-air...so I take it that we're getting some practice.

The german AF has some stuff permantly based over here. they have an AAA school at my hometown of El Paso (ft Bliss) and they have a weapons school for a/c at holloman in alamogordo NM.

From What I know of the MiG's, they are a wandering bunch...they go from NATO base to Nato base to give familiarization training. They come to 2-4 stateside bases a year.

They are pretty nifty looking planes. They are just a little bigger (sizewise) than a F/A-18 Hornet.
