Three Bragg MPs probed for drug activity

Associated Press

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Three Fort Bragg soldiers are being investigated for illegal drug activity at the Army post, a military spokesman said Wednesday.
The soldiers are being investigated for possession, use and some distribution of illegal substances, said Lt. Col. Billy Buckner, an 18th Airborne Corps spokesman. It’s unknown what type of drugs allegedly are involved, he said.

A fourth soldier who was part of the investigation died after apparently shooting himself at an indoor shooting range last week. The soldier, identified as Pvt. Andrew Sparkman, was shot Aug. 7, about a week after investigators had interviewed him, Buckner said.

The soldiers all were assigned to the 21st Military Police Company, 16th Military Police Brigade of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg.

The three remaining soldiers, whose identities have not been released, have been suspended from law-enforcement duties pending the completion of the investigation, Buckner said.

No charges have been filed. It is unclear when investigators will complete their work and report to the unit commander. The soldiers could face disciplinary action up to a court martial depending on investigators’ findings, Buckner said.

Wasn't there another drug scandal involving the same MP unit a couple years back?

'Probed' for drug activity?

That doesn't sound very comfortable!

MP's?? Drugs?? at Bragg?? No way, not again.

Seriously, now. Didn't the same probe a few years ago have to do with the whole Skinhead thing that went on back here, or was that a different time period.

The skinhead problem first came to public attention (to my knowledge) around 1995/1996 when a trooper (or perhaps troopers, I can't recall) committed a hate crime against a black couple. The whole division was inspected for racist tatoos (no joke, I recall inspecting my troops and being inspected in the HHC dayroom), with JAG providing Xerox copies of drawings of the supposedly more common types. I don't know if this was connected with the MP drug ring in 2000-2001. I was long gone from Bragg by then.

Back in the early 80s the MPs and the 307E switched barracks. The first time that there was a health and welfare inspection severals caches of controlled substances were found in HHCs area. Charlie company troops had found some when looking for places to hide their explosives and searched their part of the barracks and removed/disposed of all controlled substances previously. The more things change the more they stay the same.

It sucks to see ANY soldier involved in drug activity, MPs or otherwise. Don't these youngsters stay busy enough? I just hope that this is an isolated incident.
