Chance Of A Short Trip Home For Soldiers On Yearlong Tour
[New York Times, August 11, 2003]
Maj. Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, has proposed an unusual holiday that would permit his troops to visit home once in their lengthy tours of duty in Iraq.
- "Hundreds of thousands of American servicemen and women are deployed across the world in the war on terror. By bringing hope to the oppressed, and delivering justice to the violent, they are making America more secure. "

It seems like several Pnet members have posted good things to say about MG Petraeus. It would seem that this man who obviously cares for his troops, should go far,and I hope he does, based on this.I think, however, they will have a hard time implementing this,sadly.[82nd][E6][uswingsr][infantry][scout]

Damn straight! Now, let's hope we can get 535 other men (and women) to care about our troops. Yeah, it'll be expensive, but Congress needs to get behind our troops, and appropriate some damn money!

Iraq commanders seek two-week respite for troops during one-year tour
By Matthew Cox
Times staff writer
Commanders in Iraq want to give soldiers a break during their year-long tour by sending them home on leave.
Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of V Corps , told the Associated Press that the proposal is being considered to keep morale up among soldiers serving in the hostile country.
“The intent would be that between your fifth and 10th month of deployment you’d get 14 days of leave and be able to go home,” Sanchez told AP from Iraq, adding that he hoped the plan would be approved “within a couple of weeks.”
Maj. Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) , also mentioned the proposal at the end of a three-page letter to family members of 101st soldiers serving in Iraq.
“While I don’t want to get hopes up too high, I should mention that we are also working on a mid-tour leave program,” Maj. Gen. David Petreaus wrote in the July 31 letter.
“I have formally requested that the program be initiated after we have been in country for six months and that our soldiers be able to fly from Mosul to Fort Campbell for 10-14 days of chargeable leave.”
The proposal, however, had not reached the Pentagon as of Aug. 12.
“The Army is not looking at this,” said one Pentagon official, who characterized the idea as a logistical nightmare.
Petraeus was careful to tell family members that it would be a challenge to get the proposed leave plan approved.
“This will not be easy – especially as the residual air defense threat (there have been several surface-to-air missile launches to the south of our area) has prevented the presumption of civilian passenger flights into Iraq so far. And it will be very expensive for our Army,” he wrote.
“In any event, we will likely wait some time for approval of such a program and, more importantly, for funding for the aircraft needed for it. We’ll keep you posted on this effort.”

If FEDEX is starting to operate in Iraq, it should be possible to start commercial flights in the not so distant future.

Logistical nightmare or not, it is a way to take of the troops and needs to happen, similar to the mid-tour "R&Rs" troops took in Vietnam.
