Soldier in Afghanistan accidentally wounds self with pistol

By Todd Pitman
Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan — A soldier serving in Afghanistan was seriously wounded Wednesday when he shot himself by accident with a 9 mm pistol, a U.S. military spokesman said.
The incident occurred at an American air base in the southern city of Kandahar, military spokesman Lt. Col. Douglas Lefforge said in a statement from Bagram Air Base, the headquarters of U.S. forces.

The soldier’s wound was described as “serious” but he was in surgery and in stable condition, Lefforge said. It was unclear how the pistol, carried by many American soldiers in the country, discharged.

“The accident is under investigation. The name of the wounded soldier is being withheld for privacy,” Lefforge said.

Meanwhile, a rocket fired by unidentified attackers exploded early Wednesday near a coalition base in the eastern city of Khost, Lefforge said. No damage or injuries were sustained.

Rocket attacks occur almost daily against coalition bases spread throughout eastern and southern Afghanistan, but casualties are rare.

In northern Afghanistan, Afghan troops and American special operations forces recovered a cache of unexploded ordnance and weapons in a former Taliban stronghold near Mazar-e-Sharif.

The ordnance was found in a cave in the village of Khawaja Qala. The weapons, including three artillery pieces and one 14.5 mm machine gun, were destroyed in a controlled explosion, Lefforge said.

About 11,500 mostly American troops are in Afghanistan carrying out operations against insurgents who’ve markedly stepped up attacks against the government in recent months

[OO] add another notch to the Litany Of Adult Experiences" sigh...

BTW, the above comes from a chapter in Bob Green's book "All Summer Long." The LAE is a collection of moments in which one realizes their age. Good example would be noticing the centerfold of a Playboy magazine was only 19 years old and thinking she was just a kid, or the first time you catch yourself saying or doing the things your father once did...

"The degenerative and loony should never be denigrated but, rather, thanked. In their absence, the rest of you would be obliged to fill congressional seats... positions naturally unsavory to the sane and honorable."

I posted a thread here about that a while back. Seeing a little hottie in Tim Horton's and thinking "Wipe that crap off your face and pull your damn pants up."
