ive been doing alot of thinking, and i think i want to go to selection (sfas). obviously i would wait until after i return from ranger school, but i feel like i need to move up in the socom community. ive talked to a few of my close friends in battalion about it and they dont understand why i would want to go to sf. the mentality in battalion is that the only unit in the army worth going too after battalion is delta. i have plans for making that move, but i would like to spend some time in an a team. i am confident that i will make it, i am just wondering what your opinions are. should i wait until i am an e-5? e-6?

Willj,
I know the mentality you are talking about. But the best always have to be looking upward and SF is the next step. But I would wait until you get Ranger School and your E-5 first. You can get many good schools (if you are not at war) in the first year you have your E-5 in Batt and then go SF. Don't be in such a big hurry, you have lots of time and going SF as an NCO will help. Another thing to think about is that you will be smoked by Ranger School and it will take a few months to get your body back to normal. You want to be in top shape before you try SF, so some time in 3/75 will give you time to get in shape again and get some other schools too. Relax young man, I know Rangers are hard chargers but you do have time to do it all.

Depends on the direction of your motivation Will... Do you view direct action as the primary means of mission accomplishment? Can you see yourself performing Ops that resemble something the Peace Corps does? Sure, ODAs can kick arse when needed but the bulk of their time is spent on the "hearts & minds" aspect of UCW. Advice I always give is to wait until your at least an E5 and give the move carefull consideration...

what schools do e-5's in battalion normally get? most of the e-5's i know have gone to sere but thats about it. thats probably because we've been in freakin war since i joined, but thats why im asking. also, when you and khyros were in batt., was it hard to get your e-5? i know for us that they dont give it to most guys unless they are reenlisting to stay in battalion. from what i understand they only have so many e-5 slots that they can give out per year.oh btw, history channel has the black hawk down story on right now. ive seen it on a couple times this week but i thought i would go ahead and thow that out there.

After Ranger School, I went to SERE, Jumpmaster, EMT, PLDC, SOT, Advanced Demo and some guys got Scuba too. This was all in about a year. So they can come fast and furious but we weren't at war either. Then at E-6 you can get HALO and others. In fact, a couple of our E-6's went to a school that they couldn't even talk about. I still don't know what it was or about. So you can pretty much get any school that SF does in Batt. Just the mission is different. The biggest difference is stated above, but SF has mostly NCO's that you would be working with, as the Batt's have privates. Myself, I was a direct action type of guy, but I also know if I would have stayed in, I would have tried SF at some point.

Will, the advice you have is probably the best you can get. You won't even be considered for SFAS until you are E-4 promotable. And I don't recall what it is right now, but there are requirements regarding time in service upon completion of SFQC. Bottom line is, for active duty SF that is something to keep in mind for a second enlistment.

holy **** scuba! ive never seen anyone in 3rd batt with a scuba patch. that would be a cool school. the only people i know with halo wings are our co and 1sgt. by the way, do any of you guys know 1sgt wilson. that guy is nuts. he won best ranger one year. he was one of the guys in panama that got in trouble. i dont want to get into the details but if you know the guy you'll know the story. id follow that guy into a machine gun pit anyday. maybe i will hold out on the sf idea for now. i like killing people too much. im just trying to find a way to move up in the world.

Scuba is a smoker as the other team leader in my squad went. He came back and would kill us with flutter kicks. He could do them forever. Then we would go to the pool and see how many laps you could do underwater! Smoker!!!!
Wilson, was he ever in 2/75? I used to have a Wilson squad leader in my platoon. Don't know if it is the same guys though. This Wilson was crazy too.
