I would echo the comments by sf11b p. LRS is a very specialized unit limited to reconnaisance activities. You are trying to imitate Ranger units rather than a true LRS unit. There are colleges that have, or used to have, Ranger type units. Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama used to have just such a unit called the Swamp Foxes.

Regardless of whether you ultimately are able to get this done for your ROTC unit, maintain your own high standards and you will be better prepared for the Army.

Finally. I'm getting somewhere.

sf11b_p has an excellent point. LRS are very much specialized. And the name doesn't exactly reflect what I'm looking at doing. This is true. But the whole concept of using 5/7 people was attractive, b/c I've already taught a class to the MS1's on small unit tatics that were used in Vietnam, mostly LRRP/LRP/LRS however you please, and since this whole project is an experiment to see if it will work or not. Creating a ranger team would involve lots of personell and that's harder to coordinate since this is more or less outside of ROTC.

As far as khyros's question. My battalion commander said he's all for it and in fact he had many contacts that he was willing to use to help me fulfill this mission. With his support I can get a lot of cooperation out of the reserve units that were turning me down, and the liability issue isn't an issue since tech. we are all military personnel b/c we all have contracts. My 1st LT is hooah and said he'd be willing to provide supervision as well as classroom time, we have a new infantry Sgt. that just came in, so I have yet to see what his ability is. I've got an entire swat team willing to participate, several other police officers, US Marhsal Warrant Recovery team, former and current reserve components are willing to come out and speak with us and particpate is some training. EMS teams are willing to teach us first aid +. So I have many volunteers to work with.

sf11b_p that's a great idea! I had put some thought into that, but I wasn't sure how cadre would react, b/c obviously we'd have to stop doing the politically correct crap and actually have our instructors raise their voices at us and what not. I can have the training grounds at Aberdeen to use. The standards are high and I have set up an interview process to get the selected cadets.

Hey all I appreciate your responses, and rethinking the LRS name is something to look into. It was just a concept I was playing with. I'm flexible either way, just calling ourselves a ranger team might hurt the ego of our actuall ranger challenge team and i'm sure it would get all political from there and hinder what i'm trying to do. I'm not looking to cause interference.

Frankly I think you are barking up the wrong tree. Its wonderful to see your enthusiasm but redirect it to the basics. Practice tactical
proficiency on weekends. Through the week D&C, land navigation and whatever else you can think of. Back to basics. Young officers have to be able to read a map and get from one point to another, fill their role in formation and be tactically proficient. Not every Cadet will be in the combat arms but no matter the branch they need to know the basics.

Plastic -

Good motivation, troop! Just remember:

Crawl, Walk, Run...

The LRRP guys from you seek to emulate already had a pretty strong base of knowledge before they attended RECONDO school in VN.

Focus on the basics, get them down, then you can work on stuff like MOUT and CQB stuff like all those who want to work with you seem eager to teach.

A quick word about instructors: Just because you have DONE something, doesn't mean you are the best guy to TEACH it. Be sure you screen these potential instructors prior to exposing them to your cadets.

Above all - Have fun with it! You're still in that mode, while in college. The sense of urgency will increase soon enough, once you graduate and move on to the formal military training.

Go to the roughest biker-bar in town with your six man “ROTC-LRS” team (Officers don’t serve on LRS teams by the way…) and announce to the entire bar that:

A) I Celibate diversity, GAY POWER RULES!
B) I ride a scooter and Harleys suck!
C) I love France and I hate the U.S.A.

Now practice your E&E… []

Um... EBL, think you might want to add an R to step A... Otherwise, the poor cadet will sound like a disturbed priest looking fo an alter boy[OO] Of course, with the way cadets/lieutenants navigate, he might end up going into a leather bar in which the above statements could receive a standing ovation and an invitation.
