I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE that my engine swap is done! Project CJ-5.0 as i now call it is running smoothly and powerfully now that I have installed new injectors and got the gremlins out of the EFI system. Only a few minor problems I have to sort out before I can get it registered.

1) New 100amp 1-wire alternator wont throw a charge ( I hate electrical system problems)

2) Temp guage stopped working, possibly a simple ground problem.

3) Fine tune the Hydraulic clutch & get the clutch disc broken in.

Either way, should be registered and on the street and more importantly the trails by December 1st! Hmmm,,,my timing needs some work I guess,an open-top Jeep just in time for winter driving,,,,, oh-well. (did I mention it has NO heater)

So,,, anyone want to run some trails come spring,,, we have awsome trails here in SW Texas & New Mexico,, in Feb is the Chili Challenge event where hundreds of vehicles show up to run these trails all week long, you are always welcome here.

PS: I plan on having video of the Jeep on youtube soon, will post links when I do.

Reminds me of my CJ-7. The only problems I had with that thing were electrical. But I guess the best thing about doing a frame-off like I did was that I knew where the problems were.

Anyway, good luck with the rest of the work and throw some pics up when you get them.

Thanks,

I also cant stand electrical problems, so instead of messing with an 28 year old wiring harness, I put in a new Painless Wiring harness, as well as a new application specific harness for the EFI.So now I have all new wiring that I installed and know everything about (in theory)

I called Jegs yesterday regarding the alternator, turns out they sent me the wrong part, it's not even a 1-wire alternator but a high amp mustang replacement. New (correct) 120 amp 1-wire alt will be in wednesday, Jeep will be on a shake-down trail run this upcoming weekend.

OK,,,,

got the alternator in, works perfect. Took it for a test run yesterday, ran horrible and sucked down half a tank of gas in just 45 miles

Today I disconnected the ECM from the battery which 'reset ' it. Hooked it back up and took it for another test run,,,  12mpg (better than before and not bad for a V-8), so HH6 followed in the Liberty and off into the mountains of the high-desert to start stress-testing it,,, did awsome!!! Climbs like a mountain goat, plenty of power in the deep sand,,,I am 100% convinced that fuel injection was the way to go,, even with the headaches of getting it running. Plus,, doing burn-outs with 33 inch BFG Mud Terrains (it also has lockers so both tires spin/grip) is a hoot!!!!!!

SO,,, an AIRBORNE SUCCESS!!!! Beers on me, ya just gotta come collect and run some trails with me.

So,,, what do you guys think,,, Jump WIngs, 82nd patch or 325 Crest painted on the hood???,,,,, and what ever should I name the damn thing???

Very nice looking Jeep.  I'm pleased to hear your getting 12 mpg.  I'm sitting at about 9-10 mpg and can't figure out why.  My tailpipe is jet black around the edge like it's running rich. My cat converter has been changed, all four O2 sensors test good, it's driving me crazy.  The dealership said they have no idea.  I think their lazy, but thats my opinion.  I understand I am running 35's but I would think I should be at 12-14 mpg.  I know many other guys with my setup getting atleast that.  I'm even running a drop in AEM Dryflow air filter.  I use Royal Purple Synthetic Oil.  Hell, my Jeep's fluids are mostly Royal Purple, (Oil, Trans Fluid, Coolant Additive, Gear Lube).  Oil is changed every 5k.

When you bolted on the 35's did you swap out the gears??  Depending on the stock ratio,, tires that tall will dramatically reduce mileage, as the motor is working harder and at higher rpm's to turn them, the Jeep is about as aerodynamic as a sheet of plywood, so take whatever adventages you can.

Here are a few conversion tools to help sellect the right tires/gearing combo;

http://www.chrismans.com/Calculators.html

http://manoian.net/jeep/gear_ratio_calculator.html

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm

Plus,,,,while you are in there changing out gears is the time to install traction aids, such as limited-slip or even better, selectable lockers such as E-Lockers, ARB Air-Lockers or OX-Lockers,,, then you can really have a blast off-road.

Also, a little soot around the tailpipe isnt too abnormal,, but are you smelling fuel in the exhaust? Pull the sparkpluks, if they are covered in a black powdery soot you are definately running rich, on a fuel injected engine they should be clenan & bright. To start I'd disconnect the battery for 15 - 20 minutes and see if the ECM will reset,,,  could be that when you put in the high-flow intake the comp still thinks somthing isnt right and is pumping in more fuel to compensate.

See ya on the trails
