Hey guys,

We are putting together a military outreach team at the company I work for.  One of the things they are interested in doing is setting up an employee donations for care packages.  One of the points I made was that we should not just say we are putting together care packages we need to target certain items.

I told them that I was able to reach out and touch some deployed troopers that could help me put together a list of what they want not just what people say they need.

So I'm reaching out.  If your deployed or have been deployed in the the recent time please post a list of items that you think should be in the care packages.  If you were deployed years ago it might not help as much since the support base over there is much better.

If we get this rolling and the company actually does something useful, I might be asking for some names to mail to since I know that "Any Troop" doesn't work.  For now just a list of items would be useful.

Just make sure you're not collecting based on that posted 'list' that you see everywhere. Most of the guys with a few deployments under the belt are complaining that all the care packages are coming with the same list items and they're sick of it. Get some names and also get some ideas of different things they CANT get from the regular sources.

Otherwise.. kudo's to your work for making SUPPORT an actual duty beyond purchasing the yellow magnet.

I think it's great to support troops over in the sandbox.  I have a trooper from the 1/504 that I send a care package to every month.  He emailed me the other day saying its getting really hot again, so.......don't send anything that will melt (chocolate).  I know my trooper wants foot spray during the hot months.  At adoptaplatoon.org they are suggesting sending bug spray right now.  I will send off an email to see if my trooper has any suggestions.....but anytime I ask him to specifically tell me what he wants, he just says anything, especially junk food.

I have to agree, that list that you see is crap. It all depends on where you are and what you can get. I can tell you that where Im at really sucks because the shelves are always empty or the magazine selection is slim. Anyways, heres a list from my AO that would help:

Foot Spray (as Nurse stated, during the warmer months)

DVDs (CDR or with movies already on them), nudie magazines , limit the dog treats/ toys and shampoo, soap, baby wipes, shampoo, board games, snacks, microwavable food (the chow hall food sucks here), reading lamps, little flashlights that you can hook on your ACUs/IBAs (forgot the name of them) in green, red or blue, wash cloths/towels, if you know what kind they want can go with work out supplements, power bars, drink mixes, small weapons cleaning kit, shaving cream, cigars if they smoke them and scented candles.

Thats all I can think about for now but hope it helps. AAFES is a rip off when youre deployed so the less I have to go in there the better. We call our AAFES the walk of shame because its always empty.

Someone told me that sending over Beenie Babies was a good thing. That they give them to the kids on the street. Any truth to this?

I know some people that give things to the kids. I dont give them anything because they now expect something everytime and it causes more of a crowd when we stop. But if you want to send some I guess thats ok.

I can never get close enough to talk to them anyways . Wonder if it has anything to do with the retractable leash

A couple things that I would like to add. Most guys over here like to work out/lift, so I guess you can't go wrong with Men's Health/Fitness type magazines(although some people just get fat). Baby wipes are always welcome.

The biggest thing is dependant on where the troopers are. I know last deployment I didn't see a microwave or refrigerator the whole 12 months. Movies are always good. I eat tons of dry, unsalted mixed nuts and raisins and protein powder.

But by far the best thing I have found for my parents to send me: individual Propel drink mixes. They are made by Gatorade and come in boxes of 10. They have a really good taste, without being too sugary. I'm just giving you what I like, I have no idea if other guys like the same things.

We send out packages for the Blue Star Mothers and do well with Propel. Some of the guys want more sugar or less.Kool-aid,crystal light, ice tea mix etc.Our feedback says a nice drink container with the mixes is appreciated. A shaker.

Oatmeal is well liked for digestive purposes and some of the southern boys like some grits to send things out.Instant oatmeal packages are best.Regular flavors, quaker oats type. No strange, health&nb
