I won't even go to Atlanta without a weapon, and you're going to Iraq without one????

FYI

Here's the response I sent to KBR today.

Thanks for the feedback, from those of you who responded.  It meant a lot!

Gabriela -

Reference the Security Coordinator position you offered me at Camp Freedom / Freedom Rest in Iraq.

In addition to my duties there, I was also told I would be doing "occasional" movement to another site about a mile ("or so") away, and that the Army provides security on those movements.

Based on a tremendous amount of feedback and current information I got from guys I know over there, I gave it a lot of deliberate thought, then decided the risks of beind unarmed (even on "occasional" movements) far outweighed the benefits.

As a Security Coordinator, I would be a prime target.  If killed, it would be a tremendous boost to enemy morale.  If the company can't allow us to be armed with even a personal defense weapon, I'm not really interested.  I would be willing to reevaluate my position if the policy changes, so be sure to let me know.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

JR

Smart move JR that place is a hole no place in Iraq is safe from Indirect fire. That place has done a mind f**k on me. It seems hadji especially likes to try to hit those areas of relaxation. My spidey sense says that place is going to go south quick after the elections. The sore losers will join the insurgency and Iraq will spiral off deep into the abyss.

Blind Faith in your leaders or your country will get you killed.

Extremist are nuts on either side. Moderation is key in seeking the truth.

Its true...Delta(John) does not come to Atlanta unarmed, usually he has a pistol, a shotgun and a couple of battle rifles. You  made a smart decision JR, I do not think you can depend on anyone but yourself and your battle buddies for security no one else loves you like you and your friends do so depending on strangers for your safety is pretty dicey. Good luck.

Stand in the door!

JR,

I certainly understand your concern.  Since I cannot figure out how to post a new message, replying to yours is where my questions are.

My son will be going to Camp Freedom in April, for 60-90 days.  He has been out of the military for 3 years, and has worked for DOD contractor's since that time.  As a mother, it is beyond my thoughts, that my son could be returning to Iraq, now that he is a civilian.  To complicate that, he and his wife of 4 years, just had their first child, born 5 weeks early on Feb. 17, 2008.

I am wondering about Camp Freedom, and how safe my son might be.  He was in the Navy, on board the Milius, for the opening of the Iraq war.  His current DOD job is working with the Air Force.  He was with the Navy Star Wars Project, and I am thinking he just should have stayed there.

Sorry, I know I am rambling, but just a scared mother.  My son is gun qualified from the Navy, but I do not know if he is going armed.  I think not.

I can not answer any of your questions, but asking JR is a good start...
We do have a policy here about New members and introductions. If you want to stick around and hopefully get some answers, follow the link I am posting and then click on "Add Topic"(it is on the upper left hand side). You will be able to introduce yourself there, and it will give more folks a chance to see your question. This topic is about 4 years old, and generally relegated to the dust bin of most of our memories.

Wow, talk about about digging up a dead body. JR deployed and has since returned, not as a contractor, but as an Army Joe. Look at the dates of this thread. Bury this sucker!

Your son will be fine.
