Since Khyros suggested it I'm starting this topic. When going to one of these sources to find a relative or loved one who was a Paratrooper you'll need to explain your relation(they can only release this information to relatives, I believe) and as much information as you have, i.e. dates of service(at least the years), units, full name, etc. The most important thing is the individual's service number and/or Social Security number. Most of the WWII veterans aren't going to be found on internet message boards, so if you're looking for a Paratrooper pioneer you need to look at one of these links.
I'll update this as I get more, but this is a start:
The National Personnel Records Center http://vetrecs.archives.gov (no it doesn't need the triple w). Remember that with the government it takes a while.
The Static Line (this is a montly newspaper for Paratroopers) http://www.staticlinemagazine.com/
The 82nd Airborne Division Association http://www.82ndassociation.org This has a link to Chapters, with the info on contacting the Chapter including the web page, if it has one. The 82nd quarterly publication is the Paraglide. To have a notice published send it to the following address:
Paraglide, P.O. Box 9308, Fayetteville, NC 28311-9308
The 101st Airborne Division Association http://www.screamingeagle.org/
The 75th Ranger Regiment Association http://www.75thrra.com/
The U.S. Army Ranger Association http://www.ranger.org/
The Special Forces Association http://www.sfahq.org/
509th Parachute Infantry Association http://www.509thinfantry.org/
Here is a more complete list of Airborne associations: http://www.normandyallies.org/dbase-airborne.htm
However, anyone trying to use this list should be aware that not all of the information is up to date. For instance, the information on the 509th Association is wrong(there has only been one Association) and out of date. It is offered simply as a resource to use as a starting point.
Also, here is a website that summarizes the campaigns, battles and history of the different Airborne units in World War II: http://www.ww2-airborne.us/
This is a start. If I have something wrong someone e-mail me and I will check it out and correct when required. I will also update as necesssary.
Just a note, as the Treasurer of the Association, if you are looking for a 509th veteran, post your query on the message board at the 509th site if it is a modern 509'er i.e. a Mainz, Vicenza, Ft. Rucker, Ft. Chaffee or Ft. Polk veteran. If you are looking for a WWII veteran contact me and I will get you in contact with the Secretary to post the information in the newsletter.
