Last week I made my second trip to Ft. Richardson in a little over two months.  The 3-509th had their Welcome Home Ball Friday night.  Friday during the day I went out to Ft. Richardson with another Association member(an Army vet whose uncle was in the 509th in WWII) and spent some time with a few of the Troopers at Battalion HQ.  We then went over to Fox Company 725th BSB.  Fox Company served their time in Iraq with the 3 Geronimo, and I attended a formation for the Company where I presented them with a plaque and a certificate thanking them from the Association and showing the Association's recognition of them as part of the 509th.

The ball was Friday night at the Sheraton Anchorage.  After the Battalion CO spoke(including pointing out that at one point while deployed there was a Marine 3 star and an Army 3 star arguing over who would get the Battalion in their area ) the USARAK Commander, MG Stephen Layfield, gave the keynote speech.  Following this part of the deployment video was shown to the audience.  Finally after the official events were over I presented a plaque to the NCO and Trooper of the Year(the Trooper of the Year is actually the same TOY for 2006 as well as 2007).

In his remarks the Battalion CO recognized the other Association member and myself for making the trip up to attend the ceremony.  I have to confess that getting a standing ovation from the Paratroopers in the room was a little emotional.  All in all, an outstanding trip.  Now over the next three months the Battalion and the rest of the Brigade will begin a reset and go through their changes of command for the Officer and NCO leaders throughout the unit.  In less than a year I expect to return in order to attend their next deployment ceremony.
