Screw the fancy lights... I want police officers to have the ability to remotely shut down a car's engine in front of them so that high speed chases become a thing of the past. Oh... and I also want my state to pass a one strike your out law for violent crime.
The technology exists, but you wind up wiping out the electronics for the rest of the cars in the area, including the pursuit car!!

Along the lines of existing technology, I've seen patent approvals for a couple of different types of vehicle shutdown systems that rely on the "activation" of a signal sent to a remote and/or in-car monitoring device which in turn sends a signal to an actuator sensor in the vehicle to shut'er off.

Of course, the whole idea is to detect "out of the ordinary" conditions that activate that signal. One patent approval stated - this signal can come from the vehicle itself and/or remotely.  Having a car
smart enough to know it is being used incorrectly by whom ever that can be monitored......I can just hear the Norstar sexy female voice now...your emergency activation signal is being sent....NOW!  Goodby!

Seen the system where you target the tail of the vehicle your chasing and then shoot a gps 'dart'. You can then fall back and track by sat. Its like Police Geocaching!

I've seen the system called TOW.  It's a wire guided missile that destroys the target vehicle through a sight guided process by which the targeting vehicle can insure only the target vehicle is struck.  It reduces court costs, the cost of incarceration is significantly lowered, serves as an effective derrent to other potential offenders and the recidivism rate is 0% as well.

The focus originally was to build a compact portable tunable system to be integrated in a police car (Ford Crown Victoria) and having the following operational capabilities:
• Operational range of frequencies tunable in the 350-1350 MHz range
• Immobilizing all vehicles with microprocessors at the range exceeding 50 meters
• HPEMS fits on a roof of a vehicle

I am just waiting for my personal light amplification of stimulated emission of radiation weapon which consist of the following components: a power supply, pumping device, lasing medium and a optical resonant cavity. There is no trace element of the weapon source, the target is disabled (baked) and I can clearly see where it is being pointed if I use a dye emitter.  TAC has one mounted on his Saucer and I am sure you Space Shuttle door gunners have all seen the ones on out satellites during repairs.

Did you note the last update from the above website was 2004 testing... My guess is that the system became a weapon and was militarized just like in Real Genius.
