That is crazy. It is also crazy to have a 20 year old as a LEO. I didn't think that was approved in most states. A black eye for all of us in LE.

I was in purchasing an off duty rig from a LE shop in Detroit when in walks two Detroit PD Officers.  A female over 21 (FTO) and her trainee who was 18 years of age.  She had to buy his Glock 27 for him.  Isn't that something?  I wonder if that Wis. dept. did psych evals?  I know our dept. does not.  Were about 800 sworn and growing.  I really wish our dept. did atleast a psych eval.  I know of a few people who are prime for this sort of thing and they also carry a badge.

Let's not get too weirded out here.  We allow 18-20 year olds in the military to serve with weapons in EVERY branch of our military and by in large none of them get pysch evals either.  There will always be a few cases of "Joe go wrong."  So The Wisconsin Deputy melted down, it's a tragedy!  My sympathy to everyone directly involved, but I don't think we need to change the process do you?  Unless you are open for debate on the LIBERAL side of this coin for the direct comparison of LEO's to MILITARY which is where the ACLU and others would love to take this I am sure.... "OMG we can't have our unstable young men having guns...wait until they grow up a little more. They just can't handle the responsibility yet."

Think about it out to the logical conclusions of Socratic Argument.....

I happen to agree. Only I was carrying a gun at 17. A big pig of an M60. What I couldn't do was go out and buy a privately owned gun. What I find interesting is that the new LEO had to have her TO go buy the gun for her because she was not old enough to buy it herself. Something to be said for department issued weapons and arms rooms.

The problem with comparing 17-18 year old troops with weapons and 20 year old LEO's is apples and oranges.

The LEO is going to be unsupervised 99% of the time and the majority of the people that he is going to be around are unarmed. Whereas, the young armed troop will nearly always have somebody in close proximity and they will more than likely be as will armed as he is or better.

The majority of law enforcement agencies in the United States require a minimum age of 21. I remember a time when the mimimum age for NYPD was 25. IMHO, most 18 year olds are not mature enough to be running around unsupervised with weapons, that goes for MP's too. Young MP's are known for their power trips.

The last "young" officer that I can remember around here got de-certified for felonious off-duty conduct. I do not know if he was ever prosecuted. The only reason that the agency hired him was because he comes from a family that is very well known for its law enforcement officers (Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, etc)

BTW, that training officer violated federal statute by purchasing that weapon for the young officer. I would like to know how she answered the "straw buyer" question on the 4473.

I seem to recall sometime back (in the 80s) if I recall right that a troop walked into his orderly room in Korea and opened up with an M16. Nobody there had a weapon but the troop.

I seem to recall a hand grenade being thrown into a tent in Kuwait.

The military full of similiar stories, so I have to disagree here.
