One thing you might talk to him about, at Anzio B Company was overrun during a German offensive on February 29th.  They were on a forward position beyond the main line of resistance.  The MLR held and B Company's positions were retaken but only 1 officer and 22 Troopers were left.  The remainder had either been KIA or taken prisoner.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American GI.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

"History teaches that when you become indifferent and lose the will to fight someone who has the will to fight will take over." COLONEL BULL SIMONS

Whoah.  Yeah, I'd heard about that, but didn't think my uncle was involved, because I hadn't known that E company had become B company.

As my uncle wasn't KIA or captured, he had to be one of the 22.  By Anzio, he was already a corporal.  (He had been a sergeant in the regular army, prior to joining the 509th at its inception, but said he had to give up his stripes to volunteer for the 509th).

BTW, he said he'd volunteered to join the 509th (again, at their inception -- he was one of its charter members) on a whim because the extra $50 "hazard pay" sounded good to him.  Although, according to an article in a local paper where they interviewed him shortly after his return to the states, he said that, after a while, he'd wondered whether the extra pay warranted getting shot at with such greater frequency.
