Naval aviator and NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II first tested the untethered EVA unit on Feb 7, 1984.

Astronaut McCandless is the son of late USN commander Bruce McCandless...MOH recipient for actions near Guadalcanal in 1942 aboard the USS San Francisco [CA-38].

After McCandless' MMU test NASA attempted to use the unit during actual satellite retrieval missions with mixed results.  After the Challenger disaster [1986] NASA became real shy towards added risks during EVAs [untethered EVAs] and canceled the MMU program.  MMUs were supposed to be extensively used in building the ISS.  Here is a link with technical info on the MMU:

The science fiction film "Space Cowboys" [2000] depicted extensive use of MMUs during the space scenes.  Producers went the extra mile to make the fake MMU/space-suits look real.  Minature units were also used for some of the sequences.

Wasn't the first Manned Manuevering Unit a rowboat?

The hippo is unpredictable and aggressive with old scars and fresh, deep wounds providing signs of daily fights that are accompanied by much bellowing, neighing and snorting.

"Veritas Omnia Vincula Vincit"......."Send Me"......"Sua Sponte"

When life sucks....make it swallow!

"Modify the wedge! First squad! Bound!....."

Dennis, don't you have one of those MMUs in your spaceship?  Of course a more advanced version than what we earthlings could ever design.

Below...an official NASA pic of McCandless before his historic MMU mission and another of him testing the unit above the Challenger cargo bay [and mission patch]:
