I was in they Army for about eight years and I'm now AIr Force Security forces; been doing this since '99 now.  I was Infantry in the Army and I can say Security Forces is WAY diffrerent in many aspects but I enjoy the job for the most part.  I'm not sure how it would stack up to ARmy MP but from what I've seen in training and heard from prior service MPs, it's all about the same crap.  Pays the bills pretty good though.

Well I put a call into a recruiter. I'll have to see what he says when he gets back to me after the holiday. I would imagine I can get released from this Try One a few months early since we are not slated to deploy anytime soon. I am sure I will have to go to tech school since I doubt 19D transfers to Security Force. My coworker who was both active duty and NG MP may have to go to tech school also, which is kind of silly, but he has been out of the game for awhile.

Yeah, you guys will both have to go to tech school - even with MP experience there's a lot of stuff that SPs do that MPs don't, and vice versa. It's definitely not rocket surgery, but even if most of it is similar it's decent training.

One thing I would mention is when doing a cross-service transfer or prior service enlistment, the recruiter can either make you or break you for rank - it's ALL about your contract. They can set it up so you keep your current or former rank, drop a pay grade, keep your time in grade, or lose it entirely. Don't let them tell you they can't let you keep your rank, it's just a matter of how hard they want to work. I have had a bunch of prior service guys working with me, and it is amazing the difference in contracts. Make sure you get what you've already earned.

I had to go through Tech School; it was pretty lame. As Active Duty, both my buddy (who was also a prior 19D, like you) and I had to stay in the barracks (dorms; a.k.a. "The Jail House") while the National Guard and Reserve Prior Service guys got to stay at the hotel right across the street. Strange, I know but it had to do with their units paying for their school and we were considered "Pipe-liners". Anyway, we didn't have to deal with allot of the BS the young troops did e.g.; inspections; Phase program; curfews; etc. but it was still a pain in the @$$ sometimes. Just get used to walking around and all the boots yelling "Stand By!!!" whenever you go past. All in all it wasn't too bad but it was allot different to anything I had ever seen in the Army. It'll take you a while to understand hoe the Security Forces Chain of Command works; a First Sergeant isn't really a "First Sergeant" by Army standard i.e.; it's not a rank; it's a duty position and more than likely, your First Sergeant won't even be the same AFSC (like MOS) as you. Also, as it's a duty position, a First Sergeant in the Air Force can be an E-7; E-8 or E-9; I know weird. Your Operations Superintendent, normally a Senior Master Sergeant/SMSgt/E-8 is more like what we think of as a first Sergeant. What else... oh, all NCOs can be called "Sir" and "Ma'am"; more weirdness... Young troops in many cases have more clout than NCOs. ...I could go on.

The biggest advice I can give you is, the Air Force doesn't like the party scene like the Army. Definitely DON'T buy for an underage troop and don't flirt with any of the girls... they’ll hem you up quick for that stuff. You have to play by the book 110% in the Air Force; even when nobody really knows what the book says to begin with. It’ll be a strange transition brother, but you'll get it down in time... just play the wall for a while man. Good luck and keep us posted on your endeavors.

Oh and on a final note, I know a ton of prior MPs from both the Army and USMC; none had to go through Tech Scool... check on that for yopur buddy; it sounds like BS although I will agree that there's some differences in the two jobs.

Q-tip, I have heard that advice being given to someone before about staying away from the young female recruits in the AF. Must really be a problem. As far as the MP I know, he was advised that it depends on the Wing CO on whether or not he goes to tech school. I guess one unit said he had to and one said maybe not. He is being told he has to sign first and then they will attempt a waiver from the CO. Sounds a little sketchy to me. Seems like they could apply for the waiver ahead of time. As far as me going to the school, I am not sweating that too much. I could use a break from work and intervening military time doesn't count as lost time towards retirement  Actually one of the reasons I am looking at the ANG is the chance to do the occasional TDY.

Again, same advice - you're exactly right... they can guarantee anything you agree to in the contract BEFORE you sign it, and that includes a Wing commander waiver for tech school. Once you sign that contract they are under no obligation to do anything. What they're saying is typical recruiter crap to just get you to sign. Your call.

As far as differences between an infantry company and a security forces squadron... wow. Where to start?

Rocket surgery? Dayum...maybe I don't wish I had made it to Big Blue! My nephew enlisted in the AF and completed Security Force school this fall...already he said their after him to go Blue to Green as an MP. So what gives...either the AF is hurting for Security guys or they're over strength, seems consistancy is not a strong suite in the Aim High Air Force.

Stand in the door!

We're actually hurting when it comes to manpower. In a nut-shell it's about cut-backs man... it's budget cut-backs... the mission needs more so they cut back on man-power... it's strange I know but somewhere up in the grand scheme of things I guess it makes sense.
