I have all the qualifications for this speciality - fitness for Airborne, high score on the DLAB, proficiency with a few European languages and basic knowledge of some Asian - but one dogging little blot on my criminal record: a felony conviction for vandalism.....at age 15. Over ten years ago, now. The reason I took the DLAB, by the way, was for crypto in the Navy, which I didn't get owing to the Top Secret clearance. Angered by this - I had my heart set on it for a long time - I backed out. Basically, I want to if I'd be wasting my time if I try for PSYOPS in the Army. Will that (non-drug-related, non-sexual, non-violent!) felony on my juvenile record keep me out of it?

Thanks in advance.

For the majority of 37F work a Secret is all that is needed.  With 10 years between you and the offense you might be eligable for the TS anyway now.  PSYOP is a great way to go.  I worked with those guys for about 6 years.

Stop by the inprocessing forum and post an intro so you can be appropriately welcomed--don't forget to update your bio, people sometimes get a little testy but only if you are beligerant when you get here--beligerance later is expected but play by the rules

Were you treated as an adult, ie; handled in Superior Court rather than juvenile court or family court? What sentence was handed down? What was the extent of the damages??

Restitution was $5000. Case was in juvenile court, was not charged as an adult. I got some community service and was put on house arrest. In state of Virginia, defacing a school is a felony, hence the somewhat severe sentence.

With damages of $5K, it would have been a felony anywhere in the United States! Your juvie record should have been sealed by the court if you were not treated as an adult. However, I would tell the recruiter about what happened and go forward with the process. DO NOT LIE!!! Just because the court record is sealed, does not mean that the guys doing your scurity clearance won't find out about it!

You'll need a felony waiver, juvie or not.  It is worth at least talking to an Army recruiter about it.

Well, that's about what I expected. I suppose then that I'll need a felony waiver to even enlist, regardless of the MOS?

Talk to a Recruiter if you really have your heart set on being in the Army and going Psyops. Your Juvenile status will be taken into account, dude they're enlisting 42 year olds, tatoo freaks, basically anyone who can chew gum and walk at the same time as long as they are not a career criminal. You may have to do a little work, you may have to swallow some pride and explain your actions but if it's what you want who gives a rat's ass just do it. You sound like you have a bit of an attitude, that will serve you well in Psyops as long as you don't go overboard with it. No one is gonna do your homework for ya but I'd be the first to say make something of yourself and give it your best shot. Anyone can make a mistake as a teenager...hopefully you learned something from it and will be a good Soldier.

Stand in the door!
