"Littoral Operating Sailors Emergency Reaction Squad"

Seriously, though, I think it's not a bad idea.  As for the "why not Marines" question, Rickdog beat me to it:  There's not enough of them to go around.  The Navy has people playing video games and working on their tans while the Army and Marines are doing back-to-back tours in the Sandbox.  Makes sense to spread the workload around.

I think that Mortarman has a good idea.  By using these guys who know boats and weapons inside and out it could be a good start.  Also, they may go back to their Vietnam lineage and wear Blask berets again, LOL

Well, if we are going to have so much overlap in the services, then why do we even have the seperate uniform, facilities and command structures for the different branches.  If we are going to dole out missions regardless of the METL of the overall services, then we should reorganize them all into one branch: the United States Military.

I agree with Vo, while I think it is right for the Navy to handle the boats the force will use I think this is the Marine's job.  If we don't have enough Marines then we need to expand the size of the Corps.  The problem here is that DOD is so committed to not raising the end strength levels that they are trying to pass off missions to other services.

One thing this article does highlight is that sending guys who don't pass BUD/S back to the fleet may not be the best way to use them.  Looking at ways of putting them in ground units is something worth considering.

Well, didn't the Canadian military go that way? (Sorry Sheridan) Look how that turned out.... Seriously though I'm all for sharing the workload. It doesn't seem right to me to have Army and Marine units doing two (or more) tours in the Box and yet the Navy swans around the Gulf, stops a patrol boat or two, and goes back home at the end of a 6 month deployment.
