Court-Martial Set For Sailor Turned Anti-War Activist

POSTED: 10:22 am EDT May 11, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- A court-martial begins Wednesday for a Navy sailor who became an anti-war activist and refused to board a ship headed for the Persian Gulf.

The petty officer has pleaded not guilty to charges of unauthorized absence and missing movement.

He has called the war in Iraq illegal and immoral and also said his military training has taught him to avoid what he views is a war crime.

He's also playing down his court-martial in San Diego and a possible year in prison saying: "The president of the United States has a DUI under his belt. I think I'll make it with a misdemeanor."

He was referring to President George W. Bush's 1976 drunken driving arrest in Maine.

"Hundreds of thousands of American servicemen and women are deployed across the world in the war on terror. By bringing hope to the oppressed, and delivering justice to the violent, they are making America more secure. "
George W. Bush

He only got three months hard labor.

U.S. Navy Judge Robert Klant reduced Paredes' pay to the level of a basic recruit and ordered him to spend two months restricted to his Navy base with three months of hard labor.

"Defense lawyer Jeremy Williams said Paredes' sentence was a victory for free expression in the military.

"This is ... a stunning blow to the prosecutors who asked for nine months in the brig," he said. "It's a huge affirmation of every sailor and military personnel's rights to speak out and follow their consciences." "

This is bullshit, an insult to everyone who fulfills their obligations and it is a stunning blow, to those who serve honorably. Another fricken peacetime warrior looking for a 9-5 and education bennies developing a "moral conscience" when it's time to do the real job. Know what, ya don't have to support the war, don't have to squeeze a trigger, you just have to show up and support the ones you've led to believe they can depend on you. Can't do it, your a liar and a coward.
