Last Friday, I went to the University of Oregon on a campus visit/tour. I spoke with one of their military science guys (a retired captain) and he told me to check out their website for info about scholarships. I'm not joining ROTC for the College Benefits and if I don't get the scholarship, I'll glady accept a commission anyway but if I can manage to get a scholarship, I'd willingly take the help with my tuition.

So I went to check out the site and the requirements seem very easy. They are that you agree to a commission, Be Between 17-26, A US Citizen, Meet the Physical Standards, Graduate from HS, Beat a 920 on the SAT, and have a 2.50 GPA or better.

My question is...Is this the actual standard?  I've been making my way through College and Scholarship Applications enough to know that quite often the "standards" they put forth are just bare minimums and they typically require a lot more. I have a 1200 SAT (Taking it again on the new test to try and improve) 3.0 GPA and a score of 280 on the APFT. According to the standards, I should be a shoe-in but I'm not so sure that a big scholarship like this would come my way that easily.

I'm not trying to sound arrogant or anything, I just want to know where I'm at and if I need to explore other options like other scholarships, loans, the dual membership program, etc. Any help I could get would be great.

We've already had this discussion.  IMO, you're competitive.

I went to Georgia Tech on a ROTC full ride. The minimums are just that, minimums. Your scores put you in the running for a four year award. If you don't get it this time, go to college for one year, enrolled in ROTC, show them that you are a hard charger with good grades and try to get a three year scholarship.

Thanks for the info and sorry about starting another topic on it. When I spoke to the Military Science guy at Oregon he said that I may be able to get a 3 year scholarship right now, if I don't get a full ride. I've also got to think about what schools would be best for me. I've checked into Oregon and like it there, Mortarman has highly recommended North Georgia College and that also looks like a great place with an awesome ROTC Program.

Besides meeting with somebody from the detachment is there any other way of telling what ROTC Programs are very squared away and what Programs are not up to par? Like a ranking system or a competition of some sort. I know about the "Best Ranger Challenge" that every school participates in, but is that a good indicator of their entire program?

Colin, did you contact my nephew at North Georgia yet?? He confirmed that OUT-OF-STATE personnel that are enrolled in the Corps of Cadets pay IN-STATE tuition.

THAT, should be motivation enough to go there. Get away from home. It will be the best decision you ever make....well until you attend the Airborne Course!!!!

Women there OUTNUMBER the men 3 to 1 if not more!!!! My nephew has a little HAMMER for a GF!!! Most of the chichas are not in the Corps.

Big Al!

I called him today and his phone was off, I'm going to call again tomorrow. I've got a bunch a questions about the campus, student body and the ROTC Program ready for him.

Yeah, I found out that little bit of intel about the tuition while checking out their website, That was the point where NGC went from "Hmm, This is something that I might want to look at it" to "Holy crap! This is a front runner!" Out-of-state tuition without a scholarship would have been a major pain in the ass! I'm definitely going to apply there as well as to a few other schools, Right now though...it's between North Georgia and another school back west. The rest are just safeties.

I still love that 3 to 1 Ratio!! Everytime I tell a buddy about the place their face lights up and they sort of scratch their head and go "North Georgia, huh? I'm gonna have to check this place out." Another guy put it better...."And those are 3 Southern Chicks! Which is the equivelant of like 17 Northern Chicks."
