Back in 1958-1959 the US Army's Frankfort Arsenal and Winchester experimented with the 6.35x48mm aka .25 Winchester. It was based off of the old .25 Remington case. What if someone were to take a 100 grain 6.35mm bullet and put it in a shortened and necked down Czech 7.62x45mm case creating a new 6.35x43mm round travelling at around 2900 fps for the M-16?
That makes for around 1,850 ft lbs of muzzle energy and seems like it would be a very nice assault rifle and SAW cartridge to me. The Brits experimented with a 6.25x43mm intermediate cartridge in the late 1960s and the US Army experimented with the 6x45mm SAW cartridge in the early '70s.
It seems to me that the Czech 7.62x45mm case would be a better starting point than the .25 or .30 Remington cases and could hold more powder than the 7.62x39mm case. Just brain storming here, any thoughts?
In this photo below, the 6x45mm SAW is the cartridge on the far right. The 6.25x43mm Brit case is the second from the right and the 6.35x48mm is the 4th from the right.

Oh well, It looks like the Military has decided on the 6.8x43mm SPC instead.
