JFK skipper to be relieved

Times staff

The Navy will relieve the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy on Friday, saying it has lost confidence in his ability to command. Capt. Stephen G. Squires, who took command of the warship April 8, will become the 11th commanding officer fired this year, and the first carrier skipper to be relieved since September 2002.
Squires’ sacking followed a review of an investigation examining the July 22 collision between the carrier and a civilian boat in the Persian Gulf.

The Kennedy struck the boat, called a dhow, as it was conducting night flight operations. Dhows are regional watercraft which vary in size and are used for fishing, trade and recreation. Officials would not provide specific details of the crash, citing the ongoing investigation.

Capt. John W. Miller, the former commanding officer of the recently decommissioned carrier Constellation, will replace Squires as JFK’s interim skipper. Squires will be temporarily reassigned to duties with Commander, Carrier Group 6, in Mayport, Fla., officials said.

What's the problem?  The skipper was merely trying to re-enact what the carrier's namesake, JFK, did in WWII.  Namely run into to someone else's boat at night.  Hell, JFK got an award for that.

Uh, WTF OVER! Why is anyone concerned about the civies who died when there's a bigger question. How did this boat get so godamned close eh? Why didn't the rest of the escort fleet, and CAP it had to pick it's way through to get to the JFK do something about it? No wonder the F'ing rags are keen on the idea of attacking our naval vessels with speedboats... if a fricking little dhow that's basic design has remained the same since 600 AD can sidle right up to one of our most prized ships... the tangos must be under the impression they have carte blanche to bomb anything flying a stars & stripes ensign. The admiral needs to be relieved and courtmartialed. Not because he ran over a stupid boat, but because he put thousands of lives and his ship in jeopardy.
