Mom Sentenced to Life for Infant's Death
By Associated Press
October 31, 2003, 9:47 AM EST
Riverside, Calif. quote: A woman whose baby overdosed on methamphetamine, possibly contained in the mother's breast milk, was sentenced to life in prison for his murder.
Amy Leanne Prien, 31, was sentenced Thursday in the death of 3-month-old Jacob Wesley Smith, who was found dead in her home Jan. 19, 2002.
Prosecutors said the baby ingested methamphetamine either from breast milk or tainted baby bottle liners used to package the drug in Prien's home.
Prien, who has three other children, was found guilty last month of second-degree murder, four counts of child endangerment and misdemeanor drug possession.
Prosecutors said they aggressively prosecuted Prien as a deterrent to other drug users. Deputy District Attorney Allison Nelson said the life sentence was "the only way to protect society and her children."
Defense lawyer Stephen Yagman said he would appeal. Prien will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
