"The survey of 1,900 soldiers found about 9.6 percent had symptoms of the disorder, putting them in line with rates from the general population."

In order to be diagnosed as PTSD you have to have, as I recall at least three of the symptoms. The article does not indicate whether those figures are those who have at least three of the symptoms, or if they include those with only one or two.

Second, many service members returning from WWII and Korea exhibited the same symptoms, but there was no separate disorder to diagnose. I don't think there is enough information available to draw any conclusions on vets from earlier conflicts, although there were many who certainly exhibited some of the same symptoms as later. It may be that Vietnam and Iraq vets have fewer problems than earlier vets, but there are no studies that I am aware of to try and look at that.

Finally, how much of this is related to service in Iraq and how much is just from general stress? Show me the studies of the general population that hasn't served in the military if you want to make those types of comparisons. Show me the studies of military personnel who haven't been to Iraq or Afghanistan(although that is a relatively small number) to show me that it is related to Iraq.

Having done a paper in college on PTSD, and having talked to a variety of Vietnam vets that were diagnosed with it, I accept that PTSD is a valid disorder. The vets that I spoke with were able to function in society but exhibited a number of physical and mental problems.

PTSD has been present after every War, it was labeled shell shock after WWII and Korea. My family members who served in WWII and Korea had symptoms. What makes these so called medical experts think the war in Iraq would be any different.

Well I am not sure what to believe about this.

One thing I do know is that some people expect our troops to get off the bird at Pope and drive on just as if they never left Bragg well that aint the way it is. As most of you know you cant just flip the "war mode" switch on and off. Damn these guys have been fighting, dieing and killing they just cant go back to "normal" just like that.

PTSD is a real thing I am sure some will use it as a way to "collect" however some will suffer from it for the rest of thier lives.

One more thing who the hell is Lars damn this guy is talking about Fing lighter in this thread I just dont get it. WTF am I missing?

He is supposedly a German civvie who bought a Zippo lighter with a parachute crest on it. He thinks it dates from Vietnam in the 1965-67 time frame, but he's probably got one of the postwar fakes that have been manufactured in market stalls in Ho Chi Minh City since the end of the war.
