I had a national guard recruiter tell me that the army is not recruiting people who have had a DUI right now.  Does this make any sense?

I got a DUI March '03.  I got off easy, just supervision for a year.  Didn't even get a suspended license.  My supervision is now over.

Would this be a problem?

On another note, I have a medical question.

When I was 17, I had my spleen removed due to a car accident.  I have had no problems with it to date.  I looked in ar40-501 -- Standards of Medical Fitness.  In Chapter 2, Physical Standards for Enlistment, Appointment, and Induction:

"2–3. Abdominal organs and gastrointestinal system

(2) Splenectomy (P41.5), except when accomplished for trauma, or conditions unrelated to the spleen, or for
hereditary spherocytosis (282.0)."

I assume a ruptured spleen induced by a car accident would be considered trauma, but my local recruiter thinks it may be a major problem.  He says that the above doesn't apply to a combat arms mos(I want to go 19d).  This is one of those things that everyone says will keep me out, but no one is giving me concrete evidence.  It seems by the manual that I should be good to go.  Does anyone know who might be able to say "go" or "no-go" on this?

Thanks for the help.  It seems I have some issues to deal with before enlisting, but with the help of many of you, I should be able to get some direction.  I really appreciate that.

ive never heard of a single dui keeping anybody out. maybe the dui compounded with the missing spleen is too much paperwork for your recruiter. its hard to say. do you have any other criminal acts on your record? are you overweight?

Go talk to a Reserve or Active Duty Recruiter for the Army. NG is state, they do things differently. The only way I can think that you wont get in with a DUI is if you have a GED. Even then you can still try for a waiver.

RULE #1 - NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, tell the military about past health problems. Its hard to say what will D.Q. you. My dad is almost legally blind in his right eye, but he memorized the eye chart and served honorably in th USCG for 24 years, until he was 62. They never caught on. If they had, he would have never served. I had mild asthma when I was young and I never told the army. I served honorably for 4 years (and I was a PT stud) but if the army knew about that, I would have been D.Q.'ed. DON"T SAY SHIT!! Go to a different recruiter if you have to!

"Do you know against what type of men you'll have to fight? We who dine on sharpened swords and drink down blazing tourches as our wine. Then for dessert they bring us broken Cretan darts and splintered pike shafts. Our pillows are shields and breastplates and beside our feet  lie bows and slings. We crown ourselves with catapult wreaths."  - Mnesimachus, Macedonian playwrite- 350 BC.

Bad advice. Something like a missing spleen is likely to be discovered at some point. If the military determines you lied on your enlistment papers you will not get in or, if you are already in, you are likely to be discharged with a less than honorable. Plus, if you have any permanent problems which the missing spleen aggravates you can not get disability or veterans benefits because you lied.

Most problems can be waivered and honesty is the best policy in this case. Find out what Blacksmith 6 or one of the other recruiters here have to say.

Thanks for the replies.

I kind of had the feeling that the NG recruiter was trying to pull something.  He also said that it would be easier for me to go NG, get trained, then go active.  Yeah right.

Well, I would never be able to get around the spleen thing, considering the scar from my bellybutton to my ribcage.  But anyway, it happened 14 years ago, and I have never had one problem because of it.  I am not overweight, in fact maybe 5-8 pounds under.  I am in good physical condition, and I run about 3 miles per day.

As far as the DUI goes, I have no criminal record whatsoever.  I hadn't even had a speeding ticket for about 5 years before the DUI.  It was an isolated incident and bad judgement on my part, but that was it.

Your best bet is to talk to an AD recruiter. If you are elible he is not going to turn you away. If he tells you he can't enlist you then go back to the NG recruiter. Stick to your guns on BAC and an airborne unit.

one dui will not keep you out, the spleen might. as far as going from guard to active, tell that recruiter he's full of sh!t. the national guard is very hard pressed to release soldiers to active duty, trust me, ive been trying for awhile. im hoping this deployment will help me out abit. dont stop trying, you'll get in eventually.i think the army is about to have a big retention problem.
