France Rejects Reference to God in EU's Constitution
NewsMax.com Wires
Tuesday, May 25, 2004

BRUSSELS, Belgium – France said Monday it could not accept references to God and Christianity in the European Union's constitution.
France and Belgium have been most opposed to religious references in the charter. Italy and Poland, backed by Pope John Paul II, want the charter to acknowledge Christianity's role.
"I think the text as is, is a balanced one," said French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said. "The text already includes a mention to heritage."
The 25 EU foreign ministers set down for a new session of negotiations, one week after talks failed to narrow deep differences over a constitutional draft, which should be finalized by the June 17-18 summit of government leaders.
The constitution seeks to simplify decision-making in the EU and prevent a minority of states from blocking decisions.
The place of religion in the charter's preamble has been hotly debated since negotiations on the constitution began in early 2002.
Foreign ministers from Poland, Italy, Portugal, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and the Czech Republic proposed a "further attention to a reference to the Christian roots of Europe," at an EU meeting to overcome difference on the constitution.
"The amendment we ask for is aimed to recognize a historical truth," the seven ministers said in a statement. "We do not want to disregard neither the secular nature [of the EU] ... nor the respect of any other religious or philosophical belief."
France wants to stick to the current text, which says the EU draws "inspiration from the cultural, religious and humanist inheritance of Europe."
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, also backing the current text, warned that any mention of Christianity would mean "we have to bear in mind other religions as well."

RR,

No what they are talking about is the EU's new constitution. So they can do whatever they want with it. Besides, we can always change it the next time France surrenders.

France is soooooooo confused. All this comming from a country who's roots are deeeeeply embeded in Catholisism. France shouldn't have a vote, they havn't fought for the right yet.

Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin, 1759

One died for your soul; the other for your freedom."

I find it somewhat interesting that there are those who would become so worked up about references to God, not only in 'constitutions', but all across the public spectrum and all across the world. They act as if removing any reference to God would somehow cause Him to case to be a factor in their lives, at which time (an unreachable instant) they could go about their merry, with the god of 'self' firmly upon the thone of their lives. A thoughtful perusal of the book of Romans seems to indicate that the knowledge that God 'IS' is firmly ingrained in each and every individual, at some level. Here is a quote for your consideration.

Worship: God's Inward Necessity

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created
him; male and female He created them.
--Genesis 1:27

I believe that He created man out of no external necessity. I
believe it was an internal necessity. God, being the God He was and
is, and being infinitely perfect and infinitely beautiful and
infinitely glorious and infinitely admirable and infinitely loving,
out of His own inward necessity had to have some creature that was
capable of admiring Him and loving Him and knowing Him. So God
made man in His own image; in the image and likeness of God made
He him; and He made him as near to being like Himself as it was
possible for the creature to be like the Creator. The most godlike
thing in the universe is the soul of man.

The reason God made man in His image was that he might appreciate
God and admire and adore and worship; so that God might not be a
picture, so to speak, hanging in a gallery with nobody looking at
Him. He might not be a flower that no one could smell; He might
not be a star that no one could see. God made somebody to smell
that flower, the lily of the valley. He wanted someone to see that
glorious image. He wanted someone to see the star, so He made us
and in making us He made us to worship Him

A.W. Tozer, "Worship: The Missing Jewel"

If The above is true hen there is no way any man or government will EVER be able to somehow orge about God.

Comments, anyone?

B4B,

Good post.  I think it is rather funny to hear about people suing the Government over the Pledge of Alligance.  By not saying the word "God" does not make him less in your life.  He is where you need him to be and by not saying his name does not make him less of a figure in your life.

What do you expect from a country who has concentration camps and gas houses on its own soil? I've seen them, in eastern France. The nazis set 'em up and told the local populace, "Go, bring us all your Jews and criminals" SO THEY DID!! No arguments, no smuggling, no resistance, just willful compliance. The french are among the most amoral group of people on earth. No wonder they get their ass kicked on a regular basis. They believe in and stand for nothing. Why would God help them in battle??

"Do you know against what type of men you'll have to fight? We who dine on sharpened swords and drink down blazing tourches as our wine. Then for dessert they bring us broken Cretan darts and splintered pike shafts. Our pillows are shields and breastplates and beside our feet  lie bows and slings. We crown ourselves with catapult wreaths."  - Mnesimachus, Macedonian playwrite- 350 BC.
