Baghdad, Iraq
Story by Spc. Rachel Brune quote: Capt. Martin J. Steiger has flown the New York Police Department (NYPD) flag in six countries throughout his two-year deployment for Operation Enduring Freedom. The 800th MP Brigade’s enemy prisoner of war/civilian internee officer raised the flag one last time at brigade headquarters here Aug.21, 2003.
Steiger, a sergeant with the NYPD narcotics division, was activated Jan. 1, 2002, to work as liaison officer for the Coalition Forces Land Component Command Provost Marshal’s Office (CFLCC PMO).
During that time, he traveled to Bagram and Kandahar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekhistan, Oman and Kuwait. In each place, he raised and photographed the flag, even posing with the ambassador to Kuwait at one time.
“I’ll probably give it to the police museum when I get back, if they want it,” said Steiger, who will rejoin the NYPD after taking his leave.
The flag is embroidered: “NYPD Gone but not forgotten. 9-11-01.”
Steiger served on active duty based in Uniondale, N.Y., from July to December, 2002. He has served in theater with the 800th MP Brigade since that time, working in the operations section.
He was presented with the Joint Services Achievement medal in a ceremony at Camp Arifjan March 1, 2003
