Three sailors die, 70 injured in bus-truck collision
Carolina Morning News
Three U.S. sailors died and 70 others were injured Friday morning when a bus carrying them to Beaufort National Cemetery for a memorial service collided head-on with a truck rig on U.S. 17 near Gardens Corner.
The bus was one of four taking sailors to a service for William Pinckney, for whom a new ship in Charleston is named. The buses were southbound just north of Gardens Corner on U.S. 17 at about 8 a.m. when one of the buses ran off the right shoulder of the road.
The driver overcorrected, crossed the center line and collided with the truck. The driver of the bus and two other sailors were thrown from the vehicle on impact and killed.
The truck ended up in a ditch, and a second bus of sailors swerved to miss the collision and came to rest in a yard. The two other buses were not involved.
There were about 80 passengers on both buses involved in the crash. Many are from San Diego, Calif., and were assigned to the USS Pinckney.
About 70 of the passengers were injured, 38 of whom suffered minor injuries. The rest, including the driver of the rig, had more serious injuries.
All were taken to the Naval Hospital in Beaufort and hospitals in Walterboro, Charleston and Savannah. They were taken by helicopter, ambulance and the WJWJ-TV van.
U.S. 17 was closed after the crash, and traffic was rerouted.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation team was called in to investigate and recreate the crash. Excessive speed was not a factor in the crash, authorities said.
As of 12:45 p.m. Friday, Highway Patrol was preparing to tow the wreckage.
